What is DDP shipping?

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) is an Incoterms arrangement under which the seller or its logistics partner is responsible for transport, export and import customs clearance, duties and final delivery to the named address. Under DDP shipping to the USA, the importer receives the goods without handling customs procedures in person.

How a typical DDP shipment works

  1. Booking and pickup: cargo is collected from the factory and delivered to the export terminal.
  2. Export customs: the forwarder files export declarations in the origin country.
  3. Ocean or air transport: cargo moves under a master or house bill of lading.
  4. US customs clearance: a licensed customs broker files entry, pays duties and clears CBP holds.
  5. Last-mile delivery: after release, cargo is delivered to a private warehouse, a 3PL overseas warehouse or an Amazon FBA fulfilment centre.

Documents you still need to provide

Even under DDP, importers must supply an accurate commercial invoice, packing list, product information and, where applicable, certificates or licences. Read our [customs clearance FAQ](/en-US/faq) for details.

Benefits and risks

Benefits: predictable landed cost, a simpler process for first-time importers and faster handover into Amazon FBA.

Risks: the seller controls the broker; an unclear contract can leave you without entry records (CBP Form 7501). Always confirm who holds the customs bond and who issues the documents.

Practical checklist

  • Confirm the quoted price covers duties, customs clearance and last-mile delivery.
  • Verify the US broker holds a valid customs broker licence.
  • Keep copies of the commercial invoice, bill of lading and entry summary.
  • Ask about FBA delivery windows and pallet requirements before booking.
